Fence tools

Tools that make building a fence a lot easier.

Pneumatic nail gun. This one is a finishing nailer, and shoots long nails with very small heads. The intent is to hide the nail hole. The nails themselves aren't suitable for building the fence, but for temporary layout it works well.

Another air-powered nail gun. This one is a framing nailer, and shoots 2-inch to 3-inch nails with larger heads. When it fires it sounds about as loud as a 22 being fired. Use ear protection.

And here's the ammo. The two on the right are 2-inch and 2.75 inch nails. The longer ones are for nailing through a 2x4 (which is really 1.5x3.5, go figure) and the smaller are for nailing the slats to the 2x4 rails. The small ones on the left are finishing nails.

Here's the compressor that fuels those nailers. This one has a 150 psi nominal rating, and every 4 or so fires of the framer makes it cycle on. This, and the guns, are dangerous! Read those instructions and use ear and eye protection, and use your brain.

The air hose itself it cheap. The compressor takes a lot of current, and needs a beefy extension cord. Plus, keeping it in the shed is a lot easier than moving it every 10 feet or so of fence, and the air hose is light.

Probably one of the oldest tools -- string!

A very common level. This is a 24 inch version, made of aluminum since I plan on dropping it a lot. They have very cool (and pricy) digital levels that beep when they are, well, level. They also some in 6 to 8 foot varieties.

The way to get a post level easily. Best to have one person hold it level while a second fills the hole with concrete.

Yay for battery operated saws. I just wish they had a deeper blade...
